Ivan Wins Newbery Award

                                         Congratulations Ivan!

The One and Only Ivan, the text our class read in October for the Global  Read Aloud has won the 2013 Newbery Award. We were so very excited to learn the news. We loved the book! It made us laugh. It made us cry. It helped us enjoy a terrific story together with our new friends. We learned about animal rights and the true meaning of friendship. If we had been on the nominating committee we would have voted for Ivan. Congratulations Ms. Applegate! We love you Ivan!

Strike Up the Band

                           Calling All Third Grade Musicians

All third graders have been challenged to create their own musical instrument during the next two weeks. A project outline and rubric have been sent home in the orange folders so strike up the band. Students will be designing, creating, explaining, and playing their musical creations for you at home and their classmates here at school. They will use the concepts of pitch and vibration that we will explore in our science unit on sound. I can wait to see what instruments we have for the room 35 marching band this year!

Puritan Assessment

The Puritan assessment will be given Friday, January 11th. This is a short unit in the social studies curriculum. We have used this topic to more formally discuss notetaking and information gathering, as well as text features. Students will complete a simple t-chart for their assessment. They will be able to use their notes and their Mass Our Home textbook to locate information to complete their chart.

Welcome Ms. Lyons!

Ms. Lyons Joins Room 35 Team

We are excited to welcome Ms. Lyons, a student teacher from Worcester State University, to our classroom for a 15 week practicum. Ms. Lyons will work with the students in all academic and social areas from January 7th through early May. She will observe, assist with, and teach lessons in all subject areas during her tenure in our classroom. We are thrilled to have a second teacher in the room to help individualized the activities for all the learners in room 35.

5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - BLAST OFF!

                         Welcome to Rocket Math

The students have been introduced to Rocket Math in an effort to help them master their basic math facts. Students work with a partner to review and practice their facts each morning. They then complete a one minute fact quiz (goal 20 + facts correct) to determine their level of recall.  There are 26 levels for each operation. Students who do not meet the 20 fact goal are asked to review their sheet for homework. They will practice with their partner again the next morning and then retake their quiz. Students who accurately complete 20+ facts will advance to the next level.  Please use these facts sheets as part of your nightly fact practice. It is extremely important that students master their facts in ordered to successfully complete the third grade Math program.

Happy New Year!

New Goals for a New Year

The students arrived eager to see their friends and to further engage in third grade discoveries. They quickly settled back into our routines and engaged in their small group literature studies and accepted the many challenges of geometry.  The students set academic and social goals for 2013. They were very thoughtful and articulate in determining their future plans. Please take time to review them with your son/daughter and let him/her know how you can help. The original documents are in our class book but I made copies for the Friday folders.
