Mock MCAS

                                           Wednesday, February 27th

All third grade students will participate in a Mock MCAS experience on Wednesday. The exercise will give students the opportunity to see the room layout, practice snack and bathroom routines, and gauge the length of the test session. Students are familiar with a variety of test-taking strategies and will have the opportunity to use their knowledge to successfully complete two reading selections - one with multiple choice questions and two short responses, the other with multiple choice questions and an open response. This exercise takes the mystery out of the MCAS and makes the actual MCAS testing less intimidating for the students. Please follow-up with your son/daughter about their impressions and let me know if there are any remaining questions or concerns to be addressed before March 20th.

Biography Poster and Presentation

                                      American Revolution Biography
                                                   due March 11th

Students have selected a biography from the media center on an American Revolutionary character of their choice.  They will complete a poster and give an oral presentation in order to bring their character to life. The poster should be completed thoughtfully, relaying the facts learned by reading the text. The oral presentation will give students the opportunity to present their knowledge by acting in the role of their chosen character. They may dress as their American Revolution personality and use props to help their classmates envision the character amongst them in room 35.

100 Days Celebration

                                             Happy 100 Days!

Our 100 day celebration was magnificent. The students read If I Had $100 and responded to the text by writing their own story. Be sure to ask your son/daughter to share with you their plans for $100.  You will be pleased to know that many of the students are going to buy a huge mansion, a sports car, and lots of video games for the family with their $100. During math we calculated 100 different combination for $1.00. The highlight was packing up the 100 cans we donated to the Worcester County Food Bank. We did enjoy an "extra" snack, but only one - not one hundred.

Have You Ever Been on Safari?

                               Hurleys Go On Spelling Safari

Are you bored with the same old spelling practice each week? Say, write, review is so old school. Modernize your spelling practice with a safari - wordsafari.com.  This interactive sight allows students to type in their word list then complete six levels of games as they practice their skill in spelling their weekly words. Be careful not to pop your balloons and crash. Don't spend too much time looking for letters or you'll get run over by a bull, eaten by a squid, or trampled by a kangaroo. You need to find the correct letters and spell your words quickly to survive.

Students Sent to Court

Burnaps and Hurleys Go To Court - Science Court

The students in Ms. Burnap's class and Ms. Hurley's class are learning about sound through participation in an interactive program called Science Court. Room 35 has an interactive whiteboard so students working with Ms. Hurley view a video presentation of a court case and follow-up with research and a small group discussion. The whole class then reconvenes to share responses, check their information interactively, and make a prediction about future outcomes.

When not attending Science Court with Ms. Hurley, students work with Ms. Burnap to use the scientific method of exploration. They conduct and analyze hands on recreations of the Science Court experiments and record the outcome in their science journals. Cooperative groups and partners work in their laboratory to determine what sound is and why we hear sound.

The interactive technology coupled with hands-on experimentation allows students to discover the principles of sound in a developmentally appropriate and engaging environment. When your child tells you they went to court - Science Court - that's a good thing.

Sound Project a Success

                               Room 35 Marching Band Performs

The musical instruments presented today were fabulous! So many creative uses for duck tape, and so many unique patterns and colors. What a great use of recyclables -  milk cartons, water jugs, feed bags, cans, tissue boxes and more.  We will rehearse our music for a few days then the room 35 marching band will tour the school sharing our scientific knowledge and musical ability with our friends.
