The Shrewsbury Fire Department welcomes local families to a “Free Lunch” Open House on Saturday, May 4, 2013from 11:00am-2:00pm.  The Open House is aimed at teaching families fire safety and prevention practices.  The Shrewsbury Fire Department Open House will be held at Fire Headquarters, located at 11 Church Road.
The Fire Department will provide hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages for every one that attends thanks to the generous donations of our local supermarkets. There will also be free fire helmets, coloring books and badges for the kids. Fire Engines and Antique Pumpers will be on display. Fire Station tours will also be provided by Shrewsbury Firefighters.
Additionally, participants will receive safety information such as identifying home hazards, home escape plans, how to escape a fire and other emergencies.
“This event allows us to reach out to the community and arm local families with fire safety tips and prevention practices,” said Chief Vuona.  “Our open house allows families to get together and better prepares them to react if a fire does start.”
The open house is part of a broader community relations campaign that encourages families to learn about fire safety.
For more information about the Shrewsbury Fire Department open house, call Sean Bohdiewicz, Public Education Coordinator at: 508-841-1597 or email: safe.fire911@gmail.com

Speaking American

                    Students Compete in State Finals

Kudos to Malorie Baldinger, Caroline Foley, Ben Gaston, and Casey Wells for their one minute speech "If I Had One Hundred Dollars" in the state finals of the Speaking American competition April 7th. Room 35 was well represented. Congratulations to Casey Wells who tied for first place and walked away with $50. I wonder what she will do now that she has $50.

What A Crew!

                  Student Teacher and SHS Volunteers

We are thrilled to have plenty of extra help in room 35. Ms. Ashley Lyon is a student at Worcester State University. She is completing her final practicum with us(aka student teaching). This month Ashley will be taking the lead in several subjects allowing me to coordinate some small group sessions with students in reading and math.

Ms. Katelyn Lajoi is a senior at Shrewsbury High School and is completing her ACE Internship. A former Coolidge student Ms. Lajoi is tutoring reading and math with our students.

Ms. Jamie is a sophomore at SHS who volunteers Tuesday and Thursday afternoons after she finishes own her classes. She too is a former Cooldige student. Ms. Jamie works with students to reinforce the days math lesson.

We are thankful for all the help and support these vital young ladies offer to our students.  I look foreward to having my current students come back as a SHS tutor or a student teacher.

Books and Beyond Ends in April

                                  Turn in Your Reading Sheets

The PTO sponsored home reading program Books and Beyond will draw to a close at the end of April. So far 17 of our 21 students have have qualified to receive medals at the recognition ceremony. A date for the ceremony has not yet been announced but we will give you ample notice so you can attend.  Finish turning those pages and have your sheets signed so we can have 100% representation on the podium.

April Is National Poetry Month

                   Budding Poets Compose Own Poems

April is National Poetry Month. The students have enjoyed reading and writing a variety of poetic styles this year. Now they have the opportunity to share some of their favorite pieces with their classmates through the third grade poetry project. Posters displaying favorite poems, a poetic analysis, and original writing will be shared on May 1st. Be sure to check the backpack for a more detailed project description.

Just the Facts!

                  Fact Mastery Now Includes Multiplication

The key to success in mathematics is timely, accurate recall of the basic facts. Addition should be mastered at the conclusion of grade one, subtraction at the end of grade two, multiplication by the holiday break in grade three, and division by the end of grade three. For students to successfully solve the multi-step computation problems that are part of the third grade curriculum mastery of the four basic operations is essential. Please continue to practice and review for ten minutes each night.
