Snowflake Festival

Let It Snow! Let It Snow!  Let It Snow!

The annual Coolidge School Snowflake Festival will be held Friday, December 20th. The marvelous Shrewsbury High School Choir will present a concert for the students in the morning. After lunch and recess grade two will enjoy a read aloud and holiday reflection activity. If you would like to join us for our activity we will be designing away between 12:00 and 1:30 when we head off to gym.  We hope to see some of you in room 3. : )

Math Fact Mastery

                                  Rocket Math and Xtra Math

Mastery of basic facts is essential for effective computation. Both the Massachusetts Frameworks and the new common core standards indicate that elementary students should master their addition facts by the end of grade one and their subtraction by the end of grade two. Mastery is the successful completion of 100 facts in five minutes. To assist students in attaining this goal I have purchased Rocket Math, a multi-level program which allows for differentiation as students strive to master their basic facts. I have also enrolled the Happy Little Hurleys in Xtra Math, an online program which times and tracks the facts mastered by individual students. Watch for the Rocket Math sheets that come home for review and practice. I forwarded a second copy of the students' individual passwords for xtra math in the blue communication folder in case your misplaced the original.

The More You Read . . .

RAZ Kids and Reading Is Fun

The more you read the more you grow.
The more you grow the smarter you get.

Raz Kids is being enjoyed by many Happy Little Hurleys. Log in to our class with ahurleyg. Listen, read, and respond to the story. If you do not have a strong score on your comprehension quiz re-read before moving on. Raz reading can count toward the Reading Is Fun program.
The PTO home program Reading Is Fun is well underway. Students track their minutes and color books on their recording sheets. Readers who turn in ten sheets by May receive a medal at the Coolidge Reading Ceremony in May. Students should complete their fifth or sixth sheet by the end of the month to be on track for a medal. Nightly independent reading should be tracked for this program.
The Happy Little Hurleys love to read!
