Project Based Learning

                     Should Community Members Raise Chickens?

A district goal of the Shrewsbury Public Schools is student participation in project based learning. This is a student lead discovery on a topic of their choosing. Recently, the second grade students began to wonder about raising chickens. We will explore this possibility through a PBL project. Students will research the pros and cons of  raising chickens and may consider raising some here at school. Follow us as we investigate this real world learning project.

Friendship Quilt

                          Author's Theme - Friendship

The second grade team recently completed an ELA unit on determining the author's theme in literature. We shared stories of friendship. Our investigation included human friendships and unlikely animal friendships. The unit culminated with the creation of s friendship quilt - a collection of the students thoughts on friendship, which is proudly displayed in the second grade hallway. Stop by and see their thoughtful presentation.

Legos Wanted

                            Help Build Lego Kits

Mrs. Clouter is collecting legos to promote S.T.E.M. activities with Coolidge students. So far she has collected enough legos to build four kits.  Her goal is to build a class set of twenty-one. Can you help? Please send any gently used, no longer needed legos to school and we will make sure they find their way into the hands of an inquiring mind.

Rubins and Hurleys Read Together

                       Kindergarten Authors Share Their Writing

Ms. Rubin’s kindergarten class came to visit us on Author Day. They were in awe of the bright colorful books displayed by Happy Hurley Publishing. When speaking with our friends we learned that they too had published non-fiction texts. On Friday afternoon we buddy read with our friends their books on polar bears, orcas, and penguins. They were amazing. We plan to get together for shared learning again soon.

Leadership Team Visits Coolidge

                                    Coolidge Welcomes Colleagues

The Shrewsbury Schools Leadership Team meets weekly to discuss the goals and objectives of SPS and how to move toward successful implementation. Once each month the leadership holds their meeting in one of the schools. The last in-school meeting was hosted by Mrs. Clouter here at Coolidge. During the meeting the administrative team visited classrooms and sat in as observes or active participants.

Mrs. Banios, Assistant Superintendent, was a guest of the Happy Little Hurleys. She visited a differentiated math lesson where your children were engaged in solving the problem of the lesson, showing strategies for solving multiplication problems, and investigating the table of 5. She was impressed by the students' use of success criteria and their ability to articulate how they help ensure understanding. She was also noted the students abilty to think through problems and possible solution strategies.

Thank you Ms. Banios! Congratulations Hurleys on your progress with Math in Focus!
