Chris Lambert Visits
Channel Seven meteorologist Chris Lambert visited with all the second grade students on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Lambert shared information on weather forecasting and his work in the channel seven news room. He discussed the historic snow amounts recorded this winter, February in particular. His video presentation on severe storms was of most interest to the students. The Worcester tornado of 1953 generated many questions and connections. Thank you to the Coolidge School PTO for sponsoring Mr. Lambert's visit.

100 Days / 100 Cans
One hundred days of school is a very exciting event punctuated by engaging, high interest activities - Roll to 100, PIG, 100 ELA. However; Coolidge has a strong tradition of community service. At a time when the shelves of the food bank are empty the students step up to help those in need by collecting 100 cans per homeroom. 24 classrooms x 100 cans = caring. Please help if you are able by sending along any non-perishable donation by Friday, February 13th. Student Council members will deliver the much needed supplies on behalf of the entire Coolidge community.

Friendship Celebration
Friday, February 13th
We will honor friendship with a voluntary valentine celebration the afternoon of Friday, February 13th. Students who wish to exchange valentines should include all classmates. Handmade notes of friendship are as welcome as store bought cards. Please respect the Shrewsbury school's health policy prohibiting the sharing and distribution of food. Valentines may not include food or candy of any type. Pencils, erasers or other school supplies are always a welcome treat!
We are excited to celebrate the gift of friendship. Thank you for helping us do so safely and respectfully.

Historical Perspectives for Children
Marie Cure
The PTO generously sponsored a presentation from Historical Perspectives for Children again this year. Marie Cure visited with the students Wednesday, February 4th. As we begin our biography unit Madam Cure shared the important events in her life. She showed her love of science through a series of experiments. Of course, she discussed her discovery of radium and how it is used today in the treatment of cancer.
The students are always very engaged in the presentations. Thank you to everyone for the fundraising efforts that make these programs available to the students.

High Quality Work for Hurleys
The Happy Little Hurleys have settled back in to room three after our holiday break. We have reviewed the class rules and updated our goals for the second trimester. As we prepare for third grade we are focusing on high quality work. It is important that we take to heart our best effort at all times. We signed an HQW pledge on our orange pledge sheets. We intitial HQW on our nightly homework assignments. We need to make sure we meet those expectations.
* My work is neat and legible.
* I complete all parts of my assignment.
* I put forth my best effort - plan, persevere and revise.
* I rise to the challenge because I believe I can do it!
Thank you for your support of HQW.

Six More Weeks of Winter
Punxsutawney Phil Sees His Shadow
The Happy Little Hurleys were home for a snow day when Punxsutawney Phil emerged from slumber on February 2nd. Despite overcast skies those gathered on Gobbler's Knobb received the bad news. Phil saw his shadow. The prognosticator announced another six weeks of winter. While we are ready for outdoor recess again, the additional six weeks of winter will give we meteorologists much more to study. There are three more storms forecast this week. Don't pit your meter stick and boots away says Phil.

The Blizzard of 2015
Juno
The Happy Little Hurleys have been busy meteorologists. We began our weather unit after the holiday break. Monday, January 5th had extremely high winds. We logged into Weather Underground and watched the wind gust at Dean Park up to 15 miles per hour. We predicted then checked the high and low temperatures each day. We recorded the data in our journals and graphed our statistics. As meteorologist we observed a weather pattern of cold - below freezing to sub zero temperatures.
As January drew to a close the weather pattern changed. Snow moved in. Juno arrived. The blizzard of 2015 brought the largest snowfall in our area since 1917. The official record for Shrewsbury was 32.5 inches. It snowed for three days. The Hurleys documented the snowfall with meter sticks and photographs. High and low temperatures were recorded in journals. Damage on the Cape and islands was noted. Governor Baker's emergency measures were discussed. After two no school days the Hurleys returned to room three and blogged about their observations.

Monday, February 2nd brought another storm with twelve inches of snow combined with sleet this time. It was another no school day so the Hurley meteorologists when back out in the elements with their meter sticks to document the snowfall and record all relevant data.
We have had a lot of fun and learned a lot during our weather unit. We await calls from the local news stations to recruit talent.
