Happy New Year!

                                                                2014

Happy New Year to the Happy Little Hurleys and their families!
We look forward to continuing our second grade journey of growth and discovery. Soon you will receive an invitation to Author Day. We can't wait to share our nocturnal animal books with you.
As you enjoy the new year do continue to strengthen your skills with Raz Kids and Xtra Math. I know from the weekly reports I receive that many of you are practicing each night. It shows in the levels you move on your DRAs and in Rocket Math. Congratulations on your success!
Students will begin their study of geometry when we return to school on January 2nd.  Speak with your son/daughter about the shapes they find in your home to help strengthen their spacial awareness. Where do you notice lines, segments. rays? What lines are parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular? Can they find triangles. quadrangles, polygons, hexagons, and octagons? Are there any right angles in your home?
Ask questions about the books they are reading. Make predictions about what the book will be about, and what they think will happen next. Ask them to use text evidence to support their thinking. Can they retell what has happened in the story - beginning, middle, and end? Are they ready to move from retelling to summarizing? Encourage them to use proper names for the characters and to use text evidence to support their ideas. Most importantly - encourage them to read every day - independently or together.
Our morning meeting Thursday is sure to be a wonderful event as we share our vacation activities and enjoy seeing all our friends again.
